Celebrating Women in IT: Shaping the Future of the Tech Industry

Our very own Business Development Manager, Emily, completed the Empowering-You’s ‘Empowering Women to Lead Digital Transformation’ course, a comprehensive program aimed at fostering a collaborative and powerful community of women leaders in digital transformation roles. Emily’s participation in the course got us thinking about what is like to be a woman working in the tech industry: what are the challenges? What are the benefits? What is the day-to-day like? At Solab and Onboard Tracker™, we are proud to showcase the incredible achievements of all of our team members who are contributing to the IT world in remarkable ways. From software engineering to data science, these women are exemplifying the positive aspects of being part of the tech industry.

Women have been breaking barriers in the IT industry, challenging stereotypes, and making significant contributions to technological advancements. From software engineering to data science, cybersecurity to artificial intelligence, women have proven their capabilities in various IT domains. By highlighting their successes and celebrating their achievements, we aim to inspire more women to pursue careers in IT and foster an inclusive culture within tech companies.

Stella Farmer was with Solab for over 23 years, and highlighted the advantage of being a woman in tech as being more attentive to customer wants and needs. She emphasised the importance of continuous learning, being open to seeking assistance when unsure, and embracing the competitive and fast-paced nature of the industry. We asked Stella what she would say to women considering a career in tech “As in any job, be ready to learn as products and solutions change extremely fast, be open and when you are unsure, everyone around you will be only too willing to assist”.

Implementation Team Lead at Onboard Tracker for over 3 years, Rachael Pacey highlighted the advantages of diversity and innovation that women bring to the tech industry and acknowledged a key challenge being perception, “tech is still often perceived to be male dominated, too technical and not suited to women” but this is not the case, the percentage of new hires in tech that are women is increasing year on year. Rachael’s primary piece of advice for women considering a career in tech is that is not all coding and programming, that the options within the tech field are limitless!

Nikki, our Business Support Administrator, has been in the tech industry for 2 years. Having a keen interest in tech from an early age, Nikki was captivated by the remarkable advancements in technology and couldn’t imagine being in any other sector. Nikki feels that Solab fosters an environment where individuals are valued for their skills and qualifications rather than their gender. When asked what she would say to women considering a career in tech, Nikki said “You may find obstacles on route but persevere as the results are fantastic with opportunity for continuous growth in an industry that is expanding at an interesting rate.”

Finally, Lynsey, a data Scientist with over a decade of experience in tech, emphasises the importance of avoiding generalisations about women’s skills, highlighting the value of multitasking and problem-solving in the tech industry. Similar to Nikki, Lynsey doesn’t believe we take specific actions to ensure a strong female presence but rather we recruit based solely on merit prioritising skills, experience, and personality, indicating an inclusive environment where meritocracy prevails, providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of gender.

These are just the experiences of a few of our women here at Solab and Onboard Tracker™ but a key theme emerges from them all; the opportunities for women in the tech industry are endless. To empower women in IT, it is crucial to create a supportive ecosystem that embraces gender diversity. Companies with diverse teams are more likely to develop products and services that cater to a broader customer base. At Solab and Onboard Tracker™, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that empowers women in tech to thrive and lead.

Together, we are breaking barriers and shaping the future of technology, and the possibilities are limitless.
